David called Rick again as he left Cash’s office. After a few times, he tried Angela.

She didn’t answer.

Could she be a part of this? No way.

There must be a good explanation for this.

When David left the building, the streets were darker than a usual New York evening. He wanted to walk back to the hotel, but it was cold and rainy. He entered the nearest subway station, added money to his subway card, and waited for the train. After a while, he realized he was standing on the wrong side of the tracks, so he crossed the station to go uptown. The next two trains were too full to fit him in comfortably. He didn’t feel like squeezing in with other people.

He decided to walk to the hotel. He didn’t mind getting wet, and there was no reason to hurry—no one waited for him.

He used to love walking in New York. Maybe it would help him think. When he left the subway station, it had stopped raining. He closed his jacket, which helped little against the cold, and marched.

Walking could be good for him, but there were too many people in his way, and some of them bumped into him. He was not used to it anymore. Cars honked their horns, sirens screamed, and people talked loudly. The tall buildings felt taller than ever.

David had missed New York, but now it felt gray, noisy, and dirty. The people seemed like ghosts. He took a longer way to the hotel and went through Central Park. He used to take walks in the park twice a week when he lived in the city.

He sat on the first available bench, not caring if it was clean or not, and stared at the trees, the grass, and the people. Assuming Rick wouldn’t be back at the hotel anytime soon—or anytime at all—he had nothing better to do.

A good-looking younger woman ran past him in tight pants and a tank top. David wondered how she could take the cold. Another beautiful woman walked past him with a laughing baby in a stroller. She smiled at the baby but not at David.

People don’t smile at strangers in New York City.

A boy played with a ball, going back and forth, not sure where he was headed. The boy picked up the ball and left David’s sight.

It rained again, lighter this time. David didn’t mind. He looked up at the trees, which closed in on him from above. He kept trying to text and call both of his friends. Neither one answered. He didn’t even get a read receipt from Angela’s iPhone.

His phone’s battery drained.

He didn’t know what to do.

He wished he would wake up back at the hotel and see Rick in the other bed, right before the meeting with the investor.

Rick had helped David a lot. He had saved his life. Rick helped him get his life back together again. David had lost hope before Rick came along. He had given him hope.

Had Rick planned this
